Winni Schalkwijk (born in 1998) obtained both her BSc and MSc degree in Nutrition Sciences at Wageningen University (WUR). She followed the specialisation ‘Molecular Nutrition and Toxicology’, for which she performed a lab thesis on the hypothalamic inflammatory responses in cancer cachexia at the WUR, and a research internship at the UMC Groningen on intervention with an anti-inflammatory diet in brain disorders. Her studies have provided her with a background in lab work and -omics technology, along with a profound basic knowledge of pharmacology and toxicology. Moreover, she has gained experience with the design and interpretation of intervention studies. With a strong interest in clinical research, she is driven to improve the lives of people living with debilitating diseases. In January 2022, she joined the team of Astherna as a clinical research assistant. Winni works on the design of the clinical trials together with Carel, and supports Rob in activities related to preclinical development.
