Carel B. Hoyng (born in 1960) is a Full Professor in Macular Disease, and an ophthalmologist at the Department of Ophthalmology, at the Radboudumc in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. For over thirty years, Carel has a special interest in inherited as well as age-related retinal diseases. He conducted numerous studies on the clinical spectrum of Stargardt disease and was the first to describe the late-onset phenotype. He holds a database that contains clinical and genetic data of over 3,000 patients with inherited retinal degeneration, including 400 cases with Stargardt disease. In addition, he was a founder of the EUGENDA database. The ambition of Prof. Hoyng is to make new treatments available for patients with IRD, diseases that so far have been untreatable. He is the principal investigator on several clinical trials, including for STGD1. He has supervised more than 25 PhD fellows and is the (co)author of over 380 scientific papers.
