Tom Koemans (born in 1982) is clinical research assistant within Astherna. In 2018, Tom conducted his PhD research in the department of human genetics of the Radboudumc in Nijmegen (The Netherlands) on the molecular mechanisms underling intellectual disabilities. After that, he worked for commercial companies in which specialized in molecular diagnostics. He designed, validated, and certified diagnostic tests conform ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (tests and calibration) and ISO 13485:2016 (medical devices), that are currently internationally being conducted. Tom contributed to the certification conform in vitro diagnostic regulation (IVDR) for medical devices.  For this, he designed and developed multiple molecular biology quality checks (QC’s) and these products are being used in hospitals and medical centres throughout the world. Tom is using this experience for the implementation of RNA therapies for Stargardt disease and Usher syndrome for Astherna.
